I've been wondering about this for a little while and today saw a blackbird is nest with hungry chicks being fed.Is this earlier than normal, or do birds lay their eggs quite early to give them a chance to hatch and start fending for themselves in time for next winter?

When do wild birds generally start laying eggs in the South East of England

It is a bit early - I would have said usually the end of February.
The problem is that we've had an unusually mild Winter, then all this sunshine, and I think their biological clocks are a bit out of sync.
Put out some blackbird seed mix for them (or robin mix) - they will be struggling to find enough grubs - and make sure there is drinking water. I am having to pour a kettle of boiling water in my bird bath every morning at the moment, to thaw it out.

I live in the south east and the birds are all wild round here (So i've heard) and as for laying eggs well you would probaly know more about eggs than i would.
